Walking down aisle after aisle of various fishing lures in just about any big box outdoors store, tackle warehouse or even local baitshop, it is hard not to wonder where all of those fancy fishing lures end up.
The easy answer is that every single one of those baits ends up in the environment when their utility has run out, whether it broke off during fishing or came off in the belly of a fish or is tossed overboard when it becomes too chewed up or thrown in the garbage can when you clean out your boat or tackle. Because the majority of these baits are made from PVC or other form of non-biodegradable plastic, they will remain in the environment, whether it at the bottom of the water or in a landfill, for hundreds if not thousands of years. Even worse, some types of plastic degrade into smaller bits often referred to as micro plastics which have the capability to enter the food chain at the very basic of levels causing a chain reaction as they are passed onto bigger and bigger fish.
Not completely trashing the water that we love and live on was the driving force in resurrecting Bea’s Baits. Making sure our shady shorelines can be enjoyed by all was a mission of Holmes Bait and Tackle since it opened on the shores of Charlotte Harbor nearly 70 years ago and, as a bunch of old saltwater hippies, we want to make sure our aquatic playgrounds are as clean as we can get them today so that they may continue to be our source of enjoyment.
Which is why we developed Doo-B’s Hemp-Based Bioplastic Fishing Lures. Doo-B’s are the world’s first fishing lure that uses biodegradable hemp plastic to create baits that acts and feel like traditional softbaits while leaving less harmful plastic in the environment.
WHY HEMP-BASED BAITS?
Plant-based
Unlike most plastic softbaits that use polyvinyl chloride or petroleum based resins, Bea’s Bait’s uses Hemp Plastic PLA 100 to mold Doo-B’s Baits. Hemp-based is made using renewable and sustainable resources so it doesn’t require any petrochemicals and doesn’t release harmful chemicals during the production process.
Biodegradeable
Unlike traditional plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down and then only into smaller plastic particles, hemp-based plastic naturally decomposes into natural plant-based byproducts. When exposed to the elements, hemp plastic will biodegrade without leaving anything harmful in the environment.
Durable and Strong
Hemp bioplastic shares nearly all of the attributes of traditional plastic. Doo-B’s are soft and flexible like traditional softbaits and strong enough to last cast after cast and catch after catch. They can be fished just like any other softbait, using a jighead, as a jerk bait or just about any other rig you can imagine.
Reduced Toxic Chemicals
While most plastic softbaits rely solely on phthalate-based plasticizers, Doo-B’s uses a formula that includes citrus, soybean oil and other natural esthers to create a flexible material that can eliminate toxic chemicals in the production and decomposition process that can leach out into the environment.
Flavorful
Hemp-plastic is a naturally porous and fibrous material, meaning it will readily soak up oils and scents. Doo-B’s come infused with all-natural fish oils or add your favorite fish attractant to entice even the pickiest of prey.
